Meet the only two six terms National Assembly members in Nigeria

After many years of Military Rule, Nigeria returned to Democracy in 1999, and it has remained like that till now, being the longest Democratic stretch since the country gained independence in 1960. However, the return to Democracy also paved way for elections into various political offices including the Legislative positions. Nigeria runs a bicameral legislature at the Federal level, the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly known as the Senate and the Lower chamber known as the House of Representatives.

As election holds every four years, for Legislators, there is no limit to the number of times they can contest for the office, infact, they can remain in the position for life as long as their people keep electing them into the position.

The peculiarity of Legislative positions has turned some of these politicians into "Political Landlords" in Abuja as they continue to represent their people in the National Assembly since 1999 till date, These Ranking Lawmakers are:

1. Nicholas Mutu (PDP, Delta State, 1999 - Till Date)

As Methuselah is to longevity, So is Nicholas Mutu to the House of Representatives. A 6th term Lawmaker, Mutu was elected as Member of the House in 1999, and since, he has been winning elections in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019, prior to his election into the House, he served as Chairman, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State.

He served as Chairman, House Committee on NDDC between 2015 and 2019 and currently the Chairman, House Committee on Gas Resources. The soft spoken lawmaker rarely contributes to debate on the floor of the house and hardly grant interviews, but he must be doing something to retain the firm grip of his consistuents.

2. Ahmed Lawan (APC, Yobe North, House of Representatives (1999 - 2007), Senate (2007 - Till date)
The 61year-old lawmaker is currently the Senate President. An highly experienced politician, he was elected into the House of Representatives in 1999, where he served until 2007 under the platform of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP). In 2007, he stepped up to the Senate.

The Academician turned Politician was re-elected in 2011, 2015 and 2019. In 2015, he was the Preferred Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for Senate Presidency, but lost to Senator Bukola Saraki in the keenly contested election. Again in 2019, he took another shot at the top seat and successfully emerged winner
